Investigators identify cause of massive lumberyard fire in Wayne County
April 22, 2026The fire broke out around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, in Susanville, and by Monday morning the blaze was still active as crews continued working the scene, with the 110,000-square-foot main mill building completely destroyed in a fast-moving fire that tore through the structure.

The old mill was more than just a landmark — it was deeply woven into the identity and history of the town, sitting on a 172-acre property that once represented the area’s industrial backbone, even though it was no longer operating at the time of the fire.
There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials still working to determine how the blaze started. Could THIA help protect historic landmarks like this?
